They were not chosen from a particular coherent tradition within linguistics, nor were they necessarily chosen for coherence of theme or mutual comparability. Some are comprehensive, others are sharply focused on particular issues or works. Some are exploratory and make a particular claim of interest; others are illustrative and, while not necessarily reaching a conclusion of broad philosophical import, demonstrate or analyze a point that can be profitably fit into a broader context.
