Abstract: It is suggested that the Proto-Indo-Europeans had an adjective *num-téro- (or *nun-téro-) ‘present, quick’ with variant *nu-téro-; cf. Hittite nuntaras ‘promptly, soon’ as genitive of *nuntar n. < *num/n-tro- ‘haste’. Cuneiform Luvian nanuntarria- ‘of the present’ may be influenced by *num-térowhile the Young Avestan nomen gentile Naotara- is an internal derivative of Proto-Indo-Iranian *nutára- < *nu-téro- ‘quick’. The proposed etymology of this name as ‘*the quick one’ fits well into the Avestan contexts. Besides, Greek ἴκταρ ‘nearby’ can be connected with Young Avestan išarə ‘at once’. Keywords: jav. Naotara-, jav. išarə, jav. āsu.aspa-, heth. nuntaras, k.-luw. nanuntarri a, gr. ἴκταρ, lat. numerō, idg. *nu(m)-téro-, idg. *nu(m)-tro-
