In preparing this early work of Antoine Meillet for readers of English, I have permitted myself to take at face value the author’s own statement on the occasion of its reprinting in 1922: “A work such as this, with its brief presentation of just a few ideas, does not lend itself to revision or enlargement”. The present volume is, then, neither more nor less than a translation of the French text of 1908, together with the author’s prefatory remarks of 1922. Of the latter, only the first half, or those observations having a general interest, are presented here under the heading “Author’s Foreword to the Second Printing”. The others, related to particular chapters, are given in the body of the text (or in notes), with each insertion marked (Add,.). Indices, lacking in the editions of 1908 and 1922, have been added for the convenience of the reader.
