In the present article the nominal derivatives of the Indo-European verb **H₃rei̯ H- ‘to set in motion’ are analyzed from semantic and morphological points of view. These derivatives form a remarkable semantic field defined by such meanings as ‘watercourse’ – ‘river’ – ‘riverbed’ – ‘shallow’ – ‘sandbank’ – ‘sand’ – ‘sandhill’. It is natural that such terms serve as bases for hydronyms. For illustration of similar semantic dispersion, examples from Afroasiatic are used.
