Several grammar books were published during the 18th century. They fulfilled the demand among a growing middle class for guidance on how to use ‘polite’ or ‘correct’ English. Robert Lowth, an academic and Anglican bishop, compiled A Short Introduction to English Grammar – it was an extremely successful work that was reissued around 45 times between 1762 and 1800.
On these pages is a list of irregular verbs which includes forms of the past tense and past participle no longer in use. They include brake (broken) and holpen (helped). Gotten – now associated with American English but still found in some British regional dialects – is recommended as the past participle of ‘to get’.
