The early part of the book is pitched at a level suitable for students with a moderately good knowledge of high school algebra and trigonometry. The interests of students of science and engineering are especially served by the early development of concepts and tools which are needed in the study of physics. No previous study of analytic geometry is required. Instead, topics of analytic geometry are introduced as needed in carrying out the orderly development of the topics in calculus. This arrangement has the twofold advantage of allowing for the introduction of students to some of the fundamental concepts of calculus within the first five or six weeks of the course, and of making it possible to discuss many geometrical topics more effectively with the aid of calculus.
