It focuses on the auxiliary and complementation systems of the languages concerned.
This second edition was prompted by students' demand and is also justified by the fact that Semantic Syntax has remained unchallenged since its first appearance: it is still the only theory in existence actually converting well-motivated Semantic Analyses into well-formed surface structures by means of a formal apparatus, thereby revealing a mass of phenomena that have either escaped the notice of grammarians or were not integrated into an overall theory. This new edition is in principle identical to the first, published by Blackwell, Oxford in 1996, but for a number of corrections, changes and additions, including a few new bibliographical references.
