In this etymological study Catsanicos brings together Gk., Hitt. wasta- 'sin', wastai- 'to miss the mark; and Germanic words meaning ‘crime’ (OIcel. vamm, Goth. unvamms ‘without fault/blemish’ etc.), all of which he traces back to IE root *H₂wem- 'to make a mistake'.
