published in their country in 1822, at the very time when its author lay on his deathbed in Berlin. In 1830 Russia saw the beginning of a veritable
cult of Hoffmann which lasted for more than a decade, passing through several phases. Hoffmann was extensively translated, read and discussed
during that time, and his literary manner left its mark on some of the works of Russian writers.
