Interestingly enough, the distant Russians were among the earliest to print any works of E. T. A. Hoffmann in translation. The first was
published in their country in 1822, at the very time when its author lay on his deathbed in Berlin. In 1830 Russia saw the beginning of a veritable
cult of Hoffmann which lasted for more than a decade, passing through several phases. Hoffmann was extensively translated, read and discussed
during that time, and his literary manner left its mark on some of the works of Russian writers.
