It studies the relationship between the structure of knowledge carriers and the structure of knowledge. Yet this is only one of its tasks. Processes involving signs are to be found in scientific research as well as in the production and interpretation of works of literature, music, and art, in the dealings between social institutions, and in everyday communication. Such processes are not restricted to human cultures, they occur in the interactions of primates, in the activities of orientation and perception of animals, in the stimulus-response processes of all living beings, and even in the metabolism of organisms and in the processing of information in machines. In all these cases the focus of semiotic interest resides in the processes of transmission of information, i.e., in sign processes or semioses.Die Machart dieses Handbuchs hat viel mit seinem Gegenstand zu tun. Denn die Semiotik ist die Wissenschaft von den Zeichen. Sie untersucht das Verhältnis zwischen der Struktur der Wissensträger und der Struktur des Wissens. Dies ist allerdings nur eine ihrer Aufgaben. Denn Vorgänge, an denen Zeichen beteiligt sind, gibt es nicht nur in der wissenschaftlichen Forschung, sondern auch in der Produktion und Interpretation von Werken der Literatur, Musik und Kunst, im Umgang zwischen den gesellschaftlichen Institutionen und in der Alltagskommunikation. Vorgänge, an denen Zeichen beteiligt sind, sind auch nicht auf die menschlichen Kulturen beschränkt, sie treten auf in den Interaktionen aller Primaten, in den Orientierungs- und Wahrnehmungsweisen aller Lebewesen, in den Reiz- und Reaktionsprozessen der Tiere und Pflanzen, ja sogar im Stoffwechsel der Organismen und in der Informationsverarbeitung der Maschinen.
